Electrical safety around the home

Stay safe in your home by taking precautions with electricity. A few small considerations can keep you and your family safe. If you ever had a doubt or are in an emergency, call an electrician to assist immediately.

Never use damaged cords

Frayed cords or damaged electrical plugs could cause a serious accident. You may need to get a professional to inspect and or repair the product, but chances are you will need to purchase a new one. While you may not want to spend money on a new appliance, an electrical accident could cost you much, much more.

Avoid multiple adaptors

Try not to use multiple double adaptors that plug into each other. Even if you have a lot of electrical gear to plug in, spread it out across different power points. Need more power points in your home? Ask an electrician to install some for you.

Prevent trip hazards

Cords that are laid out across your floor could easily be tripped over, causing great injuries. Minimise your use of extension cords, or have them fixed to your walls at the side of the room so people cannot easily trip over them. Children especially are prone to slipping over, as they may run through the house or not see a cord when the lights are turned off.

Inspect old wiring

The wiring in an old property could become damaged or dangerous. As part of a routine home maintenance plan, ask a licensed electrician to perform an inspection. This could include climbing in the roof to have a look around, or testing outlets to ensure they are working properly.

Turn off appliances when you go on holidays

Holidays should be fun, but a fire can start in your home if electrical appliances are not turned off. Many families make the effort to turn off everything they can, because it is not only safer, but it can save electricity too.

Hire a professional

Hiring a professional and licensed electrician is essential for home safety. Electricity can kill or cause fires to start in your home, if it is not handled correctly. While many people think they make great home handymen, electrical work is not basic home maintenance. To stay safe and get the job done right the first time, call your local electrician who knows exactly what he is doing.
