5 Simple Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips
Advice
Air conditioner maintenance is important for a few reasons. A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that air conditioners can run under any conditions. However, that is not the case. Sure, air conditioners are pretty robust as far as appliances go. They are, after all, designed to run for long periods of time.
But without some care and attention every now and then, your air conditioner could deteriorate gradually. At first, this might just mean that it works a bit harder to keep the room cool. Eventually, though, it might stop altogether. By taking a few simple steps, you can keep your air conditioner happy. The results will probably also surprise you.
1. Try and minimise dust in and around your air conditioner
Dust is one of the main causes of stress for your air conditioner. As a result, it is always ideal to keep the two separated. If you see dust starting to gather around your air conditioner, take some time to wipe it away. This has two benefits. Firstly, it will keep your air conditioner looking nice and clean. Secondly, and more importantly, it will prevent excess dust from being inhaled by the unit. When dust enters your air conditioner cycle, it can cause considerable damage. It is also very difficult to detect. So avoid issues in the future and be proactive!
2. Clean the fins on your air conditioning unit
The fins of an air conditioning unit are one of the more overlooked features. It is very easy to dismiss them as just being part of the external structure, but they actually have an important role. The fins filter and streamline air as it enters the air conditioning unit. If they are clogged or bent, they can become restrictive and the air conditioner will have to work harder and use more energy. This will increase your bill and decrease your comfort. You can clean the fins on your air conditioning unit using specialised fin spray. Alternatively, you can clean them with a gentle stream of running water, but be sure to avoid wetting the internal components.
3. Check your filter frequently
The filter of your air conditioner has a simple and important task: to filter dust and debris. It should come as no surprise, then, that the filter is prone to clogging if it remains unchanged for too long. As the filter extracts dust and debris from the air, these little particles gradually build up in the filter itself. This can restrict airflow and make it harder for your air conditioner to function. Again, this will result in poor performance and higher energy consumption. You can clean your filter, but if its condition is especially bad it may need to be replaced.
4. Make sure cobwebs don’t gather on the coils
Air conditioner coils are a little bit harder to access than some of the other components we have mentioned. Nevertheless, it is important that they are not restricted by a build-up of cobwebs or debris. If you feel as though this job is best left to the professionals, get in touch with a qualified air conditioning technician.
5. Make sure you get your air conditioner serviced regularly
The key to effective air conditioner maintenance is periodic servicing. If you are diligent with scheduling air conditioner services, you can expect to get many years of high performance out of your air conditioner. Another great benefit of air conditioner services is the tips and advice you can get from the professionals. With training and experience behind them, they know everything that there is to know about air conditioning systems. If you have a question, simply ask! This can help you become better at maintaining your own air conditioner as well.
