A Guide To Different Electrician Tools!

Different Electrician Tools

When you call out an electrician, they always seem to arrive in a van or ute complete with an enormous collection of tools. So what exactly are they all? Well, there’s an almost unlimited range of electrician tools getting around and every single one has a different purpose. Going through them all one by one would take days! So we’ve gathered a list of some basic electrician tools. And they’re often more basic than you would expect – but they are still vitally important to electrical work.

Digital multimeter: One of the staple electrician tools

The digital multimeter is an electrician’s best friend – it’s the problem solver of the whole operation. Multimeters basically tell us if there’s an electrical current running through a certain area. It also tells us how strong the current is. So if there’s an issue with your electrical system, using the multimeter will help us narrow down its source. It’s also a useful safety tool, which we can use to identify live wires and the likes.

Pliers are basic electrician tools

When you searched for different electrician tools, you may have been hoping for something a little more exciting than pliers. They may be simple, but pliers are an absolute necessity for all electrical work. They have so many different uses that we can’t even list them all here. Pliers are good for anything from cutting wires, to crimping them and everything in between. Most electricians will have a range of pliers too, including needle nose pliers and adjustable multigrips.

Side cutters

Even though we can use pliers to cut wires, we normally reserve that job for the side cutters. Side cutters are designed to cut relatively heavy gauge wires, and they are a favourite among electrician tools. Cutting wires with a blunt pair of pliers is nothing short of infuriating and it can make a real mess of the wire. That’s why we always have a pair of sharp side cutters on hand – they make cutting wires a breeze.

When it comes to electrician tools, wire strippers are vital

As you have no doubt seen, electrical wires are always heavily insulated. Whether the wires are on your appliances, or in your walls, they will always be insulated for safety. So when we need to rewire an electrical system, we have to get at the wire beneath the insulation – that’s where the electrical conduction happens. To do that without damaging the wire itself, we have wire strippers. These remove the plastic or rubber insulation from around the wires, without damaging the wires themselves. The result is a clean strip of exposed wire that we can then solder or crimp to another conductive surface where necessary. Without wire strippers, our job would be a whole lot harder!

Electrician tools have to go somewhere – that’s what the tool belt is for

We haven’t even scratched the surface of electrician tools that are out there. But by now you can see that there are quite a few, and each one has a valuable and unique purpose. So how do we get at them all when we need them? Easy – with a tool belt. The tool belt is where our most frequently used tools go. It might seem pretty basic, but like our other tools, the tool belt is very important and it can improve safety too.

For example, instead of going up and down a ladder or in and out of a roof cavity, we can access the tools we need from wherever we are. This reduces the likelihood of a workplace accident, and allows us to do a quality job very efficiently. When it comes to electrician tools, the basics are just as important as any of the bigger tools getting around!
