A split system is a Air Conditioner that will Condition one room or area of your home or office.
With a discreet wall mounted indoor unit and interconnect piping and wiring to the outdoor a split system can be installed into any new or existing home. The outdoor unit is fully weather proof and can be situated on the ground up high on brackets or roof mounted on adjustable pitch brackets.
A ducted system has an indoor and outdoor unit with interconnect piping and wiring running between. It can be installed in nearly all new and existing homes. The indoor unit is located in the roof space and has flexible ductwork running to a vent in each room or area of your house. The weatherproof outdoor unit can be positioned in a location that suits.
Most ducted systems are designed to operate with a zoning system. For example it can be operated in living areas during the day and bedrooms at night.
Zoning A Ducted Air Conditioning System
Zoning allows you to turn on and off the air conditioning in certain areas of the house. This is done using your zone controller which controls damper motors in the duct work to open or close allowing or stopping the flow of air to the selected area/zone. For example a two-storey house may have bedrooms upstairs and living area downstairs, in this situation upstairs and downstairs would be on separate zones, commonly called day/night zoning.
An important factor of zoning is to reduce the size of the unit required, therefore reducing the up-front cost. In most circumstances not all parts of the home are being used at once. For example during the day the living area such as the kitchen and lounge room may be in use (zone 1), and the bedrooms may not be in use (zone 2), therefore you would switch zone 2 off and only air condition the living area. By doing this you will also save on running costs because you are air conditioning a smaller area.
